Hokoku-ji is a 700-year-old Buddhist temple with an extraordinary bamboo grove in Kamakura, Japan’s ancient capital. Visitors can have a cup of tea at the edge of the grove, and enjoy the graceful, serene beauty of more than a thousand bamboo trees. The tranquility also provokes a particular contradiction for me: given the political turmoil engulfing our world, so many people likely cannot even imagine such a place.
